St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry

SVdP Food Pantry

Saint Mary's Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul established the food pantry in 1990. The pantry is located on the lower level of the rectory. A monthly parish-wide food collection is held on the first full weekend of each month, for example a Rise and Shine (breakfast items), Paper Palooza, and Spring Cleaning. Donations may be dropped off at the doors of the church, before all weekend Masses. Members of our St. Vincent de Paul Society check expiration dates, shelve the items, and tidy up the pantry. Bulletin notices, newspaper articles, and cable TV announcements remind parishioners of upcoming collections. The notices also list items that are running low. In general, all non-perishable food items, all paper products, personal care items, household supplies, and all the staples of life are always needed.

Also available in the food pantry:

  • Emergency bags for the homeless
  • Personal hygiene kits

During the summer months, our SVdP Society cultivates two community garden plots, and the harvest is distributed to families the Society has helped throughout the year. At Easter time and Thanksgiving time, our conference has the opportunity to order food boxes from SVdP HQ in Stoughton. We supplement the donations with items from our food pantry. During February and April school vacation weeks, we reach out to families with children and offer to deliver food boxes to help get them through the week. Each weekend of Lent, we ask for different, specific items for parishioners to donate to our food pantry (one weekend, we received 80 jugs of detergent!).

When someone in the community calls the rectory in need of food, SVdP members pack up bags of food for the person. We help anyone who asks. Usually the food is delivered to the person's home. The members also may meet the recipient at the rectory. Members of the Society usually include a gift card to a local grocery store, so that the recipient may buy milk, produce, etc.

The continued generosity of St. Mary's parishioners is outstanding and keeps the food pantry well-stocked. Throughout the years, other groups have conducted collections for our food pantry.  Members of St. Vincent de Paul also conduct an annual Freedom from Hunger Food Drive in June and an annual Thanksgiving Food Collection

Through the years, we have received tremendous support from:

  • Faithful, generous parishioners
  • Religious Ed. students
  • The Scouts
  • CYO Boys and Girls Basketball teams
  • Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council #1847 Food Card Drive
  • The Rock Youth Ministry

One year, as an Eagle Scout project, a young man organized the painting of the food pantry and a parish-wide food drive. It was overwhelmingly successful. The young man also made the sign for our door.

We are most thankful for all donations.
